The US economy accounts for 25 per cent of the world economy, the EU, 32 per cent.

EU Population 455 million

Ten new states joined the EU on 1 May 2004 making it a club of 25 – a long way from its beginnings as six-nation group more than 50 years ago.

The EU is now the world's largest trading bloc, in terms of population, with 74 million new citizens taking the total to 455 million
